At Yavneh Day School, our connection to Israel is a central part of who we are. Through prayer, music, and shared experiences, we cultivate a deep sense of pride, belonging, and responsibility toward the State of Israel.
This past week was especially meaningful, beginning with our moving Evening of Song, held in honor and memory of fallen Israeli soldiers and victims of terror. Yavneh students, parents, teachers, and community members came together through music and storytelling, sharing personal memories and honoring loved ones. A particularly powerful element of the evening was “Recipes with Memories” (מתכון עם זיכרון), where participants prepared dishes in memory of those we have lost. We were also proud to premiere a short film created by our 8th grade students, highlighting their “Recipes with Memories” in remembrance of victims of October 7—a deeply emotional and impactful moment. A special thank you to Yavneh parent Yael Linzen for compiling and editing the 8th grade movie.
On Tuesday, Yom HaZikaron, we lowered the flag and gathered for a heartfelt ceremony led by our 5th and 6th graders. They led with maturity and respect, creating a meaningful experience for the entire community. Following the ceremony, parents who served in the Israeli army visited classrooms to share their experiences, while others visited the Memory Room, thoughtfully prepared by our Shinshinim, Stav and Ilai.
On Wednesday, we celebrated Yom HaAtsmaut with a joyful day of activities, performances, and a spirited quiz bowl organized by the Shinshinim. Students enjoyed a festive Israeli lunch featuring falafel, salads, pita, and ptitim, prepared by Shai Nitzan with generous support from the Nitzan family. The day concluded with a beautiful flag dance by our 6th and 7th graders, directed by Morah Nathalie and Morah Tammy, and a performance by our Lower School Choir, directed by Mr. Even.
It was a week that balanced remembrance and celebration in a truly meaningful way. Special thanks to Morah Nathalie, Morah Tammy, Mr. Even, and our Shinshinim, Stav and Ilai, for helping make these experiences so impactful for our students and community.
