Students Recognize the Good at Yavneh

Yavneh students are provided with a unique opportunity that lays the foundation for meaningful, cross-grade-level friendships: the Buddy Program. Each year, students from higher grades are paired with those from lower grades. This experience fosters authentic connections that build confidence, self esteem, and empathy. Read on for personal testimonies reflecting the good Yavneh students recognize in this program.

My big buddy is nice to me and makes me feel special during the day.

-Talia, Gan/Kinder

My big buddy is always smiling and he never misses a chance to make me laugh.

-Elis, 3rd grade

I love having a big buddy because even though they are bigger than you, they are always there to help you and make things fun.

-Naomi, 3rd grade

I teach my little buddy that they should respect everyone around them. Being a big buddy for the first time has taught me how to take care of someone. I love making my little buddy feel welcomed and happy at school.

Millie, 4th grade

In any grade divided school, it is difficult for different grades to connect with each other. Having big/little buddies in different grades means you get a chance to really get to know someone else.

Ilana, 5th grade

The Buddy Program is a central part of building community at Yavneh. You always have this person you can go to no matter what. Being a big buddy, I learned to be even more kind and very patient, it might not be their best day but you have to roll with it.

Ethan, 7th

It was definitely challenging to go from being a little buddy to having a little buddy. The realization that you now need to be there for someone else. Now being in middle school, I look forward to seeing my buddy. I am forming another relationship that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

Ella, 6th

When I was in kindergarten and I did tashlich for the first time, I enjoyed it more because my big buddy was there to show me what to do. Now that I’m a big buddy, I get to teach them new things, have new experiences, and make new memories.

Judah, 6th

Having an older buddy has influenced my life more than I could put into words. I vividly remember meeting each one and going to Tashlich, Simchat Torah, everything. Having a Big buddy has also made me a better leader, friend, and student.

Bren, 8th

I remember my big buddy was always making jokes and hanging out with me even though I was in Kindergarten. She would talk to me on the playground and she made me feel more comfortable with myself and being in this new school. When I became a big buddy, I learned to be more responsible, that my actions impact others, and that I want to be a good influence on younger kids.

Ellie, 8th
