School Logistic & Calendar Questions

What are the school hours next year? 

K-5: 8:30am – 3:30pm (dismissal might be staggered)

6-8: 8:15am – 3:45pm

Friday we will continue our early dismissal time. K-5 will dismiss at 2:45 and 6-8th will dismiss at 3:00pm.

Will aftercare be offered next year, if so, the hours?

Aftercare is available from 3:30pm – 5:30pm. We are actively working on creating a robust after school program which will include enrichment activities for students.

What is the calendar for next year?

Our first day of school is Tuesday, August 24, 2022 and the last day is Wednesday, June 7, 2023. Please find the full 2022-23 school calendar here.

Will a hot lunch option be offered next year?

Enrollment, Tuition & Tuition Assistance Questions

What is the Tuition for the 2022 – 2023 school year? 

  • K-5 2022-2023 tuition: $34,430 ($33,930 with the discount)
  • 6-8 2022-2023 tuition: $35,348 ($34,848 with the discount)

What does tuition cover? Tuition covers all classroom expenses, school supplies/books, field trips, and overnight journeys. Not included are: tuition insurance, YPA dues, and an additional fee for the 8th-grade journey to Israel.

How much is the deposit for the 2022-2023 school year?

The deposit is $1,250 or $2,000 per family.

When are deposits and re-enrollment contracts due for the 2022-2023 school year?

Deposits for current Yavneh families are due on Friday, February 18th, 2022 and deposits for new families are due on March 24th, 2022.

Can I receive the re-enrollment discount if I submit my contract without my deposit?

No. Both the signed contract and the deposit need to be submitted by Friday, February 18, 2022 for the $500 credit.

What are the payment options for next year?

Families can pay in one, three, or ten installments. Tuition insurance is required for all students. 

What is tuition insurance and where can I find more information?

The Dewar Tuition Insurance Plan is a program that is designed to protect a family’s tuition investment in the event that circumstances arise that require withdrawal or dismissal from the school. The premium is due by Monday, August 1, 2022 and is non-refundable. More information can be found here

When are re-enrollment contracts being sent for the 2022-2023 school year?

Re-enrollment contracts were sent out on Monday, February 7, 2022.

If I applied for tuition assistance for next year, when will I be notified about an award amount?

The official notification of the tuition assistance amounts are shared as part of your re-enrollment/enrollment contracts.  

When is the tuition assistance award process complete?

Typically, we will have awarded all funds by mid-March. Unfortunately, there may not be any more tuition assistance funds available for applicants after that time.

 

Health & Wellness Questions

Does my child need to be vaccinated to attend school in the 2022–2023 school year?

Like all schools in the State of California, vaccinations are required for attendance. The COVID vaccination will be added to that list of vaccines as soon as it receives final approval. 

Will my child need to wear a mask next year?

We are not sure yet. We will follow County guidelines and the guidance of our Health & Safety Committee. All COVID related practices are posted on our website.

What will the testing protocols be in the 2022-23 school year?

School Program Questions

What is the school’s Discipline Policy and how will it change? The school’s discipline policy can be found beginning on page 8 of the school policy & procedures handbook in a section titled “School Wide Student Expectations.” During the summer, the faculty, staff and members of the community will revisit this policy to ensure that it: is equitable, is rooted in restorative justice (fixing what is broken), and meets the unique needs of the entire community. Please note that the linked handbook will have revisions over the summer and will be shared with the community in early August.

Who is the Head of School for next year?

The Head of School Search Committee has been formed and is beginning to review candidates. The chairs of the committee are Shoshana Wolf and Audrey Fox. Parents will have an opportunity to meet with the finalists. Soon, you will be able to find updates on our website.

Who is the Rabbi for next year?

Who is the Rabbi for next year? Yavneh is happy to announce that our Director of Jewish Life and Learning will be Jamie Zimmer. She will bring her experience, passion and energy to all grades K-8. We will re-establish our connections with local rabbis to help serve the rabbinical and pastoral needs of the community.

How will Hebrew be taught next year?

  • Kindergarten through 2nd grade are dual language. In addition to English Language instruction taught in English & Hebrew Language instruction taught in Hebrew, other core curriculum will be taught in a dual-language model. 
  • 3rd and 4th grades will utilize our dual language model for half of the day during which they will receive Hebrew Language instruction.
  • 5th through 8th grade will receive Hebrew Language instruction in Hebrew four days per week. The language groups will be leveled by skill.
  • We will have two Shinshinim, trained Israeli teens, supporting Hebrew and Israel culture, throughout the school. 

What about other language options?

We are looking into offering an optional Spanish 1 course for 7th and 8th-grade students.

Is there standardized testing?

Students in grades 2 – 8 take the NWEA MAP testing in: mathematics, language usage, and reading comprehension. 

When and how will I hear from my student’s teachers about my student’s progress? You will receive updates in a multitude of ways:

  • Curriculum plan at the beginning of the school year
  • NWEA test results (see above) in the Spring
  • Report cards
    • •5-8: Report Cards Trimester with letter grade with sub grade
    • •K-4: Narrative report card twice a year (uniform format)
  • Parent/teacher conferences twice per year
  • At least bi-weekly classwork and assessments shared with families

How will students be assessed next year?

Assessments look different at each grade level. Some forms of assessment are formal and others are more informal. These assessments are used to: share updates about student learning with parents; help guide our instruction; and ensure we are meeting the needs of each of our students. 

What student support services will be offered next year?

Our learning specialist, Zivit Reiter, will lead our SST (student study team) process that both identify areas of need and ways to support that student.

What is the student-teacher ratio and maximum class sizes per grade?

Our goal is to have 18 – 24 students per class with a 1:12 teacher to student ratio in our K-5 classes.

Who will be my child’s teacher next year? When will I find out?

We share student placement information, including teachers, on Monday, August 8th.

Will there be field trips and journeys next year?

We are planning on having both field trips and overnight journeys for next year.   

What are examples of journeys from prior years?

4th grade focuses on the Gold Rush in California. 5th and 6th grades have often been science camp-related including trips to Yosemite and Marin Headlands. 7th grade has traveled to Ashland, Oregon to the Shakespeare Festival or to Los Angeles to visit Museums and cultural sites. 8th grade has traveled to Israel or New York and Washington DC.

Are field trips and journeys included in tuition, or are there extra fees?

Field trips and all overnight journeys are included in tuition. There is an additional fee of $1700 for the Israel Journey for 8th grade. 

What extracurricular activities, sports, and clubs will take place next year?

We are part of an athletic league that offers co-ed flag football and basketball for grades 5-8. We hope to be able to offer volleyball next year too. In addition, we offer after school enrichment classes in art for grades K-8, and speech and debate team for grades 6-8. 

Will swimming be offered as part of the PE curriculum in the 2022-23 school year?

JSV will be renovating their current pool and adding an additional lap pool. We are not sure what the availability of the pool will be during their construction process.

What electives will be offered next year in Middle School?

We offer a wide variety of electives including mult-media art, animation, robotics, coding, modern band, stock market challenge, yoga, basketball, 3D printing, and Jewish graphic novels.

Can I volunteer next year? If so, how?

Yavneh is strengthened by its partnership with parents. This year, parents have volunteered outdoors at school events. We hope that by next year, parents will be able to volunteer in the classrooms.  We will provide more information about volunteering with your back-to-school information.
