On Monday, January 12, Kitah Zayin participated in a mock trial at the Hall of Justice in San Jose. The trial was entirely student-run, with students playing the roles of lawyers, witnesses, the judge, and the bailiff. The trial was based on characters and events from The Outsiders, which students read in ELA earlier this school year. Riveting statements were delivered, objections were made, and ultimately judge Ella delivered a verdict based on the evidence presented.

“This was a life-altering experience that gave me a deeper understanding of how our judicial system works” said Kobi.

“I was already interested in joining the Mock Trial team in high school, and now I understand the court system even better” said Liam.

“I played the role of an expert witness, and it was fascinating to put together a statement to prove what only I (a doctor) could prove in this case” said Riley.

The students walked away from the experience with great pride in their accomplishments, a deeper understanding of how a court case unfolds, and even more love for the already-beloved Outsiders text.
