In Yavneh News

A decade ago, Yavneh Day School created a community-wide STEAM Initiative drawing inspiration from the wisdom of our Silicon Valley tech community, creating a robust curriculum that remains attuned to 21st-century methods and technology. During these incredible ten years, we have built a thriving program and established a mindset that nurtures students’ creativity and understanding of the world around us. On a daily basis, we foster curiosity and embrace a cross-curricular, integrated philosophy that has allowed our students to grow beyond boundaries.

Family Day of Code, Tinkering, and Play was conceived with a singular goal – to offer our families and the entire community to experience the STEAM initiative and witness how our students take ownership of their learning journey. Over the past decade, families have joined us for an array of STEAM powered activities – building flashlights from popsicle sticks, discovering the properties of magnetism through tinkering, tackling coding challenges, and exploring the world of robotics.

Together, we’ve built tiny libraries for our neighbors, learned the art of water conservation by constructing irrigation systems, unearthed hidden innovations in history in archaeological digs, and explored the wisdom of great minds like Leonardo da Vinci and Maimonides, connecting the wisdom of the past with the innovation of the future.

This year, our 10.0 event will bring back favorite activities like building and launching spaceships as well as taking on coding challenges. We are also introducing exciting new adventures, such as the the Rube Goldberg Institute Family Challenge and coding with AI for our 5th grade and middle school attendees.

As our STEAM Director, Vanina Sandel, beautifully puts it:

10 years ago, I could never have imagined the incredible impact this annual event would have on families and kids. Every student, from pre-K through 8th grade, leaves the event with greater confidence and a new set of skills and a love for STEAM that I know they will use to shape the future. Our alumni, who will be speaking at the event, are living proof of the lasting impact!

We invite you to join us in celebrating this remarkable journey. Let’s explore, learn, and play together as we dive headfirst into the next decade of innovation and creativity.
