Richard grew up in Los Altos, California, and attended San Francisco State University. He has taught physical education at local schools, where he has focused on creating healthy, engaging recess environments and promoting positive experiences on the playground. In 2012, alongside a former teammate, he founded a nonprofit sports camp that benefits the athletic department at his alma mater, Mountain View High School.

Outside of his professional work, Richard has a passion for coaching basketball and has coached locally for more than 16 years. After spending three seasons at Blach Intermediate School in Los Altos, he accepted a coaching position at Lynbrook High School in San Jose. From 2013 to 2016, he served as head coach of the Frosh-Soph team. In 2017, Richard was named Head Coach of the Varsity team.

Under his leadership, in addition to three El Camino League titles, the Vikings achieved a historic milestone in 2022, winning the Central Coast Section Championship—the first CCS boys basketball title in the school’s 60-year history.
