KITAH HAY SETS SAIL!
(by Naava, Kitah Hay student)

Did you know that 200 years ago children aged 10 and 11 often became sailors? On February 24, my fifth grade class at Yavneh Day School set sail on a tall ship from Redwood City port on an exciting adventure. We manned the
lines (ropes), steered the ship, and learned about navigation.

Our ship was called the "Hawaiian Chieftain," one of the members of the "Voyage of Discovery" fleet. There were eight crew members aboard the ship. The Hawaiian Chieftain was originally a cargo ship, but is now mainly used for tourists.

Our class learned how to raise and lower sails, steer the ship and figure out how fast we were going. We were divided into three groups and rotated through different learning centers on the ship. One rotation was "Navigation." We learned how to use many different sailing tools, such as a compass rose, a sand timer, and the Chip Log. Another rotation was "Trade," where we learned what people from different continents had and wanted. The final rotation was "Sailing." There, we learned what it was like to be a sailor 200 years ago! At the end of the day, we were impressed to realize that the eight regular crew members can expertly do the work that exhausted 40 children.

Yavneh is proud to present the musical wonders, The Alley Cats, on Friday, March 19th. Their Arts in Education program, The Do-Re-Mi's of Doo-Wop, introduces students to the American Art Form known as Doo-Wop. Students learn about the music of the era, and the musical terms pitch, tempo, harmony, and a cappella. The talented Alley Cats will make learning exciting for Yavneh students.
This program has been underwritten by Andrea and Joel Rubnitz.

"What I Wish Every Parent
of a Teenager Knew"

Saul Wasserman, MD, Child Psychiatrist

As any parent knows, the years of raising a teenager are a time of mixed blessings.  There are wonderful simchas to celebrate but also many challenges to face.  Many stressed-out teens lack the coping skills to help themselves get through difficult times.  Often, they will not ask anyone for help.  Some teens are susceptible to mental health problems or substance abuse.  How do we best support our teens while keeping our balance and maintaining a sense of humor?
