THURSDAY - A Day To Remember
When I hear two third graders walking down the hallway saying, "...that was the best day I ever had!" with a response of, "yeah me too!" I know that something went very well. The something started with the entire school community singing Ha'Tikvah on Wednesday as part of an international voice to recognize Israel and break into the Guiness Book of World Records.

It continued on Thursday morning with Rabbi Joe Black who led us in a musical and meaningful Te'Fillah. One of the aspects of this experience that made it so wonderful for the students was the fact that the talent of the performer related in a direct connection to what the children already knew. It was the construction of new knowledge on top of the existing knowledge. We know that this kind of education is the most effective we can achieve, and this is the kind of opportunity we strive to have for our students. We want to say a very special TODAH RABAH, thank you, to the Yavneh Parent Association (YPA) for sponsoring Rabbi Joe Black for this event. It was worth it.

The other wonderful experience that we had on Thursday was our celebration of Yom Ha'azmaut with a falafel lunch and Israeli dancing. The faculty felt that this meal was so important that they took it upon themselves to plan, purchase, prepare and serve a holiday lunch complete with a birthday cake. In addition, all of the teachers participated with their classes in our dance extravaganza with help from Rabbi Hahn Tapper and Judy Applesmith. The "sea of blue and white" bodies of all sizes, dancing to the sounds of our tradition was a powerful and beautiful statement. I believe that all of us at Yavneh went home that day with a strong feeling of belonging to a community with a spirit and vitality larger than the sum of its parts.
