Opportunities for Creativity and Enrichment
The Arts
From their earliest days at Yavneh, our students learn to appreciate
many forms of art and to experience the joy of creating. In addition
to art and music, teachers create opportunities for experiences in Drama
by incorporating skits and plays across the disciplines in all
grades. For middle school students, a drama elective is available.
Art
The Art curriculum allows students to explore and create in
a multitude of ways by providing instruction
in art history and the elements of design, offering exposure to local
art resources and creating opportunities for students to exhibit their
work in the community. Our students work in a variety of media to understand
themselves and their heritage, and to enrich their general and Judaic
curricula. Throughout the years, the students view works of great artists
of the world. The art studio lends itself to the students experimenting
freely with hands on projects. The students work on drawing, painting,
ceramics, mosaics, printmaking, and special holiday projects. Middle
school students rotate through a variety of creative experiences.
Music
The Music program at Yavneh emphasizes both students’ growing
appreciation of the work of others and students’ growth as creators
of music on their own. Students study music theory and different genres
as they learn to play the xylophone, recorder, and a variety of rhythm
instruments. They learn the basics of keeping tempo, reading music, and
engaging in the song. Singing in groups is the cornerstone of the Music
program, and the Yavneh School choir performs at a variety of school
events, including festival celebrations. Optional choir performances
are also held several times a year at venues such as Great America, Israel
in the Gardens and the Valley Fair Mall. Students further develop their
music skills within the Judaic Studies curriculum, which includes learning
holiday and liturgical music from many Jewish traditions.
